Bookending the National Mall, two and a half miles from the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial serves as a silent tribute to the President who guided the country through its darkest hours. Since its opening almost one hundred years ago, it has also become a backdrop to history, whether concerts, protests or movies. No trip to Washington is complete without a visit here, and an opportunity to learn some of the stories that took place here – including being hit by gunfire during the second world war.
