Madrid is the only European capital that has Islamic origins. At first, it was just a fortress with its governor and a citadel grew around it, with a square in between, for military parades, market and other uses. Remains of Jewish and Muslim houses as well as important parts of city walls are witnesses of a rich past. The advocacy of the Madrid patroness La Almudena , reflects this military origin. The Christian conquest brought not only a larger city and new walls , but a new status in which the three religious groups cohabitated. As a result we have several churches with Islamic patterns in their brick, wood or plaster work. The city became the Spanish capital in 1561 opening a gate to the Modern era.
