The Muslim wall of Madrid came to light after demolishing some 19th century houses of the nobility. Today Madrid is proud of this surviving part of the wall built during the Islamic period, between mid 9th century and the 11th. In fact, around 850 Cordoba Emir Mohammad I established a fortress and a citadel on the Almudena hill to defend Madrid from the Christian attacks as well as to keep an eye over the rebels from the city of Toledo.
