A city market originally located outside the walls, it was designed as a regular square in 1617 by Royal architect Gómez de Mora and burnt several times, the worst in 1790. It presents two significant buildings: the city Bakery and Butchery. The Madrid Main Square or Plaza Mayor was the venue for theatrical plays , tournaments, bullfights, carnival celebrations , even inquisition trials and executions. A red hearted space built for the glory of the Spanish capital and its Catholic Monarchy .
