The magnificent baroque palace was built after the fire of the old Alcazar of the Hapsburgs in 1734 on the same site. It is the largest in Western Europe. It houses more than 3000 rooms, some of which can be visited and admired. The Royal Palace is now King Philip VI official residence, but he does not live there. However the building is used by his Majesty for official occasions, such as gala dinners, welcoming new ambassadors, the military Paschal or various Royal receptions. The interiors are richly decorated with frescoes, delicate fabrics, marble, paintings, porcelain and houses an exquisite collection of clocks. The experience of visiting Madrid's Royal Palace is unique in Europe. The Muslim wall of Madrid came to light after demolishing some 19th century houses of the nobility. Today Madrid is proud of this surviving part of the wall built during the Islamic period, between mid 9th century and the 11th. In fact, around 850 Cordoba Emir Mohammad I established a fortress and a citadel on the Almudena hill to defend Madrid from the Christian attacks as well as to keep an eye over the rebels from the city of Toledo.
