There is no gate at the Puerta del Sol or the sun´s gate. However, the square is facing the east, where the sun rises. Once outside the city walls, it was on the way to the important cities of Alcalá de Henares and Guadalajara, as well as the road to the Hieronymus Monastery and Sanctuary of our Lady of Atocha . Puerta del Sol is the kilometer 0 where all the national roads depart and it is the historical center of the city. It has witnessed important historical events, such as the Uprising of the people of Madrid against Napoleonic troops on May 2nd 1808, later painted by Goya the Revolution La Gloriosa in 1868 or the Proclamation of the 2nd Republic. Today Puerta del Sol is the city's crowdest place and people still gather under the 19th century clock before midnight to celebrate the New Year.
