The San Telmo neighbourhood is today the oldest quarter in Buenos Aires. Since colonial times this part of the city has been of great significance to the local culture: historic churches, old architecture and diversity of cultures from different communities mingle to create a unique atmosphere full of tradition. Since the 1870s the neighborhood keeps one of the most intact food market of the city and since the 1970s, thanks to the initiative of the architect Jose María Peña who collected and researched old objects of the city life, San Telmo hosts the most important street fair in Buenos Aires.
